As far back as 2010 I commented upon the nefarious activities of Sir Philip Green and I’m not going to go over old ground – if you want the back-story or to find out why BHS’s demise is your fault, and mine, then key BHS into my search facility and give the posts a re-read.

In this full-stop post on the whole dirty exercise I just want to say thanks to a man once hailed as our finest retailer. I’ve no doubt he could have held out for longer, perhaps even drawing it out in the courts to an exhaustive no-win stalemate. He’s shown he has deep-pockets where legal fees are concerned and short-arms wrt his ex-employees and pensioners, and I appreciate the grudging acceptance of his moral obligations, Mind, blood from the proverbial stone has been more easily extracted. And certainly more graciously.

It’s universally accepted that the £363m contribution towards the pension shortfall of £571m is better than the recipients could have expected from the Pension Protection Fund, even though this august body have now inconceivably stated (on the record) that the latter was just an opening gambit, negotiating figure! So, far what it’s worth, and though it changes my opinion of Sir Philip not one jot, I am thankful he’s stumped-up the readies. Two years’ two late and from a self-contrived position but I’m grateful nonetheless.

It would appear he’s an individual who places profit over people and is driven by the ‘American Dream’ where his ruthless self-interests take absolute priority. How many superyachts, exotic cars or gigamansions can one man seek before he finally questions the guy in the mirror? Material consumption keeps us all wanting the latest new-look and the next gizmo, with the ultimate irony being that, even when we get it, we’re no happier and still hit the drink & drugs in frustration. Whether it’s Cristal or Tenants Extra, this is what happens when profit and self-gain takes priority over human well-being. Cheers, Sir Phil, bottoms-up.
