Being a displaced refugee from the frozen North, it always delights me when the oft forgotten half of the country makes it into the news. However, were it not for floods, fracking or footie, it would remain virtually invisible to much of the creative & financial metropolis, viewed as some recalcitrant sibling, banished to the cupboard under the stairs.
It wasn’t always so and back in the manufacturing & engineering heyday, it really was viewed as an equal partner, if not occasionally the better half. National prosperity was just that, national and prosperous. Of late though, and irrespective how much Gideon bleats on about his vision of a northern powerhouse, the continuing dominance of the South, and the global reach of the digital world, have destroyed the solidarity, the familial love, that once existed. Just look at the ‘storm in a tea-cup’ coverage the recent meltdown in the northern-centric steel industry garnered in the national media. Exactly, what meltdown!
The North feels it is being cut-adrift, much as Scotland has done for years, so don’t be overly surprised to see the rise of a northern regionalist party, demanding independence from the Westminster elite. The North is revolting!
