As an indication of how the UK follows the lead of the US we are oft heard quoting the phrase ‘when America sneezes, Britain catches a cold’ and it never seems more pertinent than our yearly adoption of their imminent Halloween and ‘Trick or Treat’ seasonal frivolities. However, as these continue to get out of hand, I feel it’s time to call it a day and curtail our slavish participation.

Back in the pre-pumpkin-day, Halloween in the UK was heralded-in by no more than a rotten gap-toothed turnip and the lighting of any candle not already used-up in the winter of discontent power-cuts. As it was seen here as no more than a bit of fun for the kids I suspect it was much the same over the pond but with Haribo as opposed to treacle toffee and parkin (go Google if you’re left perplexed). However, since the mid-80s and influenced by burgeoning parades in most major cities, more and more adults have been getting in on the act. Last year over 48% of American adults donned costume and face-paint, accounting for an astronomical spooky-season spend of $9bn, or almost $90 per household. Not content with participating themselves, 16%, over 50 million people, went even further and put a costume on their pet! WTF. And it’s all ultimately destined for landfill.

At the risk of being seen as a killjoy and old before my time, with the increased adult involvement in such escapades, along with rapid growth in grown-up toys, comic-book conventions, gaming, superhero film franchises and fantasy sports, it would appear we’re losing sight of when it’s time to put away childish things. Bah humbug and don’t you dare knock on my door tonight!
