Do Something Remarkable. Sounds obvious eh but in this world of ‘amazings’, ‘incredibles’ and ‘unbelieveables’ what’s happened to the good ol’ remarkable? Within the world you and I inhabit, the world of ups and downs, ins and outs, disappointments and achievements, loves and losses, tears and fears and most importantly the world of work let’s have a look at what’s remarkable. The key is to make someone remark upon your actions…it’s all in the title:

Whether you have your eye on a plum promotion, an even plumper payrise or just a happier relationship with your work (begin your quest with my plan on making more of your nine to…….er…….five-ish this year.

You’re either boring or you stand out. You’re either invisible or remarkable. All your life you’ve been told to shut up and fit in, keep your head down, your nose out, work hard, don’t make waves, don’t rock the boat, don’t bring attention to yourself and just get the job done. What rot! My call to you in stand up and be counted, grow and get noticed, give a damn and make a difference, have a shot at the big time! Here’s how:

1. Be Remarkable – Remarkable doesn’t mean remarkable to you. It means remarkable to your boss and the powers that be. Am I going to make a remark about it? If not, then you’re average and average is for losers!
2. Be Remarkable and Be Quick About It! – Half measures simply won’t do. Drop what you did yesterday and commit to being better.
3. Being Noticed Is Not The Same As Being Remarkable – Running down the street naked will get you noticed, but it won’t accomplish much. We’re not talking about stunts here but a longer term and better business venture.
4. Extremism In The Pursuit Of Remarkability Is No Sin – In fact it’s practically a pre-requisite. We want First place and runner-up just won’t do. The biggest, the fastest, the richest, the easiest, the most difficult. These are the extremes you need to be aiming for.
5. Not Everyone Will Appreciate Your Efforts To Be Remarkable – So what. Your goal isn’t to please everyone. Your goal is to please yourself and maybe, your boss.
6. Be The First – Roger Bannister was remarkable. The next guy, the guy who broke Bannister’s record wasn’t. He was just faster and that doesn’t matter. Who was the second person to conquer Everest? Who cares.
7. Don’t Be Afraid Of Being Remarkable – Who loses their job in the mass lay-offs? Who has trouble finding a new job? Not the remarkable minority, that’s for sure.
8. Be Remarkable About Something That Matters – There’s really no use at being remarkable at something that you (or your boss) don’t care about. Go on impress.
9. Be Prepared To Be Remarkable Again, And Again, And Again – The bad news is that everyone in today’s day and age is easily bored and fashion comes and fashion goes. Be prepared to reinvent yourself and your remarkableness again and again.
10. When Should You Start Being Remarkable – If you don’t start by Monday, you’re not serious. OK, Monday night by midnight or don’t bother. Go start.
