the crown falls
I know I’m going to incur the wrath of the populace press but has anyone else noticed the recent self-pitying tone of Prince William’s attitude towards his future role? When asked how he feels about becoming king of England, Billy-Boy replied “I try not to think about it. As I’m flying along in my helicopter through the mountains of Wales, I try desperately hard not to think about it. That can wait until I’m a little older.” Prince William is 29.
Now, I would not personally choose a constitutional monarchy because of the way it self perpetuates the in-bred class system and sends its beneficiaries mad with greed. Furthermore, it deludes them into believing that we need (and want) to hear their outdated (and insular) views on everything from architecture to politics. The only convincing argument I have ever heard for keeping the monarchy is that it keeps the extreme rightwing in check: tell a fascist that ‘the Queen wouldn’t like it” and it’ll shut them up quicker than a recital of Rule Britannia.
The least we can expect of him is to be politely silent whilst he pilots his helicopter into the Welsh mist bemoaning his gilded fate. A fate that, irrespective of the recent replacing of the civil list with a recession-proof sovereign support grant, you and I pay for. And anyway, doesn’t the boy-man have a choice? If I didn’t want to be an accountant I could drop the exams and go live on a commune. If you don’t like the heat, William, like Edward VIII, get out of the frying pan, and spend the rest of your life selling your royal trinkets and demanding ever-dwindling advances for exclusive Hello! intrusions. Your choice.
