london 2012 #2
I hate being wrong and so it is with a suitable lack of dignity I take my hat off to the unbridled success of London 2012 and all that went with it. We’ve just spent £11bn on a great big holiday, a grand party to end all parties, so we might as well have enjoyed it.
Furthermore, I am over the moon with our nation’s medal table success, even though it would be a tad surprising, given our population and resources, if we hadn’t done that well. My only wee gripe is that when, in the past, we have performed badly in the Olympics we were told that more taxpayers’ money must be spent on sport. Now we’ve done well we are told exactly the same. I can’t exactly follow the logic in that one but enough of my cynical bleating. The show must go on!
A further look at the medal table, with an eye to the size of a country’s population, shows a slightly different picture however. The real winners were Grenada, with Jamaica second and Trinidad & Tobago third. We finished in a miserable 24th position with the US and China languishing in 50th and 75th positions respectively!
By the way, my teenage son says I have far too much time on my hands.
