can pay. will have to pay

The chit-chat from the hoi-poloi in Chelsea & Fulham is that the proposed ‘mansion tax’ is unfair, impractical, vindictive and scandalous. Sadly, when you actually look into the facts these unjust feelings just don’t seem to add up. Under the scheme, it’s currently mooted that homes worth more than £2,000,000, a tad more than the average home value of £270,000 and representing less than ½% of the UK’s total housing stock, would be subject to a 1% levy on the value above £2m. In real terms, this would equate to £5,000 per year on a home worth £2,500,000 (1% of £500,000) Outrageous? No, not really, and if Thatcher hadn’t abolished the old rates system then they would be certainly paying this, if not considerably more.

Critics of the proposed mansion tax howl at the thought of any property tax but it makes you think they’re already the owners of such property.
