My, oh my, to the delight of the right-wing press and the aggravation of all in Tunbridge Wells, Jeremy Corbyn, well-known lifetime anti-monarchist decides not to sing the National Anthem but stands to attention to show respect to those who do, and those who gave their lives in the battle of Britain. Shock, Horror. As mentioned several times of late, we’ve now got someone as leader of a political party who believes in something, is prepared to display this and will, for good or bad, stand by his morals. This gentleman’s not for turning me-thinks. And long may it continue.
Speaking of ‘the royals’ did anyone else notice that, in the same way as MPs have just pocketed a nice healthy above-inflation pay hike, and whilst the rest of the country is suffering under enforced austerity, the royal family have benefited from the same? Every year, Ma’am gets a crown-estate related ‘sovereign grant’ and this year’s amounted to a whopping £44 million, up by almost 7% on last year’s whopping amount.
There is something truly mortifying about a government that slashes & burns its way through our welfare state whilst increasing payments to the royal family, who are, if you think about it, a family on welfare benefits! The sooner we realise that the Queen is already massively independently wealthy and has castles, property, artwork, jewels, treasure, and a private investment fund valued at £112 million. Why, if she’s feeling a little under the financial-cosh, then let her take in a few paying lodgers in her 775-roomed Buckingham Palace!
