sold, subject to contract
I read with dismay earlier this week that not only are 100%+ mortgages set to make a return to the high street but also that blatantly lying about your salary and earnings on mortgage applications is on the rise again. Will we, and for that read both the individual and the institution, never learn? In one particular reported case, the applicant, an au pair from eastern Europe, claimed to be earning £80,000 and managed to blag a mortgage of £250,000 on a property valued at £230,000. On how many levels can a system be broken? Look around at the current economic conditions worldwide and ask yourself do we really want to go through all this again?
Thankfully, for once I do believe the taxman is onto this sooner rather than later. A scheme to combat home-loan fraud has been launched which will see Her Majesty’s finest getting involved is cases they believe smell a bit fishy. Anyone tempted to inflate their salary should be aware that, if they’re rumbled, could find themselves investigated and potentially prosecuted for fraud. All well and good but this really shouldn’t be necessary – whatever happened to individual responsibility, living within our means, saving until we could afford it and God forbid a bit of honesty? Ah, it’s just not the Tory way!
