Americans wouldn’t be stupid enough to vote Sarah Palin into the white house would they? Of course not. That’d be like electing a second rate B-movie actor into the world’s most important position, or a semi-literate ex-drunk megalomaniac who still answered to his father, twice. Uh oh.
Even taking into account the above examples there’s never been a politician quite like this hockey-mom and when Palin says she believes she can beat Obama in 2012, it’s not an idle boast. Normal rules don’t appear to apply to the former governor of Alaska. Her endless gaffes (“We gotta stand with our North Korean allies” is only the latest in a long litany), constant self-promotion, on-going family scandals, active involvement with the extreme ‘tea-party’ movement, non-existent foreign policy knowledge and the endorsement and support of downright wacky candidates in the recent midterms only seem to make her stronger.
And if this continued success baffles the Republican party, heaven only knows what the Democrats are making of it. One thing everyone needs to appreciate however is that you underestimate this woman at your peril. Like it or not, Sarah Palin has a couple of aces up her sleeve – a certain amount of charisma, chutzpah and God forbid, sex appeal. Her self-belief and confidence is something the American populace admire and with the first black guy in the oval office they do believe anything’s possible again. Sarah Palin embodies the American Dream.
She’s also savvy and street-smart. Her grasp and use of today’s digital media is second to none – she’s the only high ranking politician to have unashamedly adopted the 140 characters of tweeting as her favoured method of communication – and whilst the knockers are obvious there’s no doubting its effectiveness. Billing herself as the voice of ‘real America’ and backing it up in short, sharp sound-bites is putting everyone else onto the back foot. And with her reality TV show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska taking the ratings by storm it’s only going to grow her grass-roots support. Ironically, being openly regarded as not very bright, not well read, not very thoughtful and certainly not very qualified to run a country are just the kind of qualities that could put this little lady into a position that we would all regret.
