honk, honk

To any regular reader, it will come as no surprise that, even though I’m always up for watching a bit of Top Gear when there’s nothing else on the box, I have little sympathy for Jeremy Clarkson as he finds himself at the centre of another self-inflicted BBC dust-up. Again. By now, we all know the ‘steak-gate’ details so I’m not going to go over them again, I am simply going to polarise the argument for you: either you think his petulant, aggressive and bullying behaviour to a fellow employee, in a public place, is acceptable. Or you don’t.

The fact that our Prime Minister couldn’t wait to jump to the defence of his friend by declaring it a massive overreaction, together with over a million people signing the petition demanding his immediate return, probably along with the head of programme producer Oisin Tymon on a silver platter, clearly displays some people do indeed think it’s acceptable. I don’t. I particularly loved the fact that the petition was delivered to the BBC in a tank. How apt. How misjudged.

Like all bullies, Clarkson’s all mouth & trousers when his gang is behind him, but it was nowhere to be seen when his crass and tasteless ‘joke’ against the inhabitants of the SS Belgrano’s home village backfired during last summer’s Argentinian Top Gear special. My, how tough he looked then. A small man with a small mind. And hopefully an equally small career in broadcasting ahead of him.
