je suis charlie?

Several of you have enquired as to my opinion on the Charlie Hebdo situation and I’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. It goes without saying that I, as any sensible, rational, humane and thinking individual of any creed or colour, abhor violence, oppression and murder, and remain shocked by recent events taking place throughout Europe. But, and I say this as a frequent Private Eye reader, sometimes satire goes too far and strays into offence, and just because you can say something doesn’t mean that you automatically should say it. If, for example, you know something upsets someone in the office, perhaps some joke particularly offends them, then should you, when the opportunity presents itself, always crack it, or continually bang-on about the subject? Or, if you want to assume the higher ground, show yourself to be sensitive, perceptive and God-forbid, mature, encourage an easier-going office environment and keep your mouth shut. For once. Free speech can mean your keep your own counsel and have the freedom to keep your opinions to yourself.
